rightspacerPetition in Support of Fair Campaign and Election Pledge

When employees seek to improve their jobs through organizing a union, democratic principles must govern the campaign and election process. As such, employees must be given an opportunity to hear both sides in order to make an informed decision. Moreover, employees must be free to form a union free of employer intimidation.

For these reasons, we urge the Holiday Inn Express, as well as all Capital District employers experiencing a union organizing drive, to adopt the following Fair Campaign and Election Principles.

  1. No forced meetings. No political candidate can force voters to attend political rallies or meetings. As such, employees should not be forced to attend mandatory meetings on company time.

  2. Equal time. There should be equal time for both sides in this election. If managers hold meetings with employees or talk one on one with employees on company time, union organizers should be able to present its point of view on company time. Equal time is the hallmark of free, fair and democratic elections.

  3. Equal access to voters. Management should not engage in campaign activities or post information without allowing equal access and space to union organizers. In political campaigns, one candidate is certainly not allowed to exclude the other from making appearances or contacting voters in any locale.

  4. Agree to a Series of Debates. Debated between candidates are anessential tool in a voter's ability to make informed decisions. therefore, the company and union should agree to hold a certain number of debates.

  5. No threats or intimidation. Coercion has no place in  free election. No free voting can occur in an atmosphere of fear or intimidation. Therefore, both the company and the union must refrain from pressure tactics and allow employees to make their desicion to join a union freely.
